THE BROODING JAZZ NEPENTHEAN (JAZZ STUDY)

With much decorum arrives the new indelible jazz mood board and sequel to 2018’s Londøn Experiment. The name of the project signifies the sullenly thoughtful jazz Nepenthean. This plant has been known by ancient writers to bring forgetfulness of one’s sorrow. The project’s intention is to dissolve the limitations that we put on sound. The restrictions we let our mind place upon hearing a particular genre of music. Continuously carrying out an improv-based groove is common stay in Jazz.

There’s a certain peripheral in the way the songs are sequenced here. The front cover’s source originates from Murmansk, Russia. At first glance, the photo seems to contain the energy of what seems to be descending rain. The muse and implied symbolism however is that half of this residence was affected by a gas explosion. Some families left everything behind claiming all to be condemned. Other families stayed changing their narrative on what had happened. With wood lining the windows, many eliminated the thought of seeking perfection. Your living conditions are yours to evaluate and the families that have stayed chose to accept the reality that surrounds them. They know joy, comfort and grace in living simply; enjoying what they already have. This is a lesson in control and understanding life’s unpredictable nature. No one is exempt from this truth; it is in each of our lives.

Listeners are invited to find their own Nepenthean and transcend circumstance. We do certainly control our reaction to things. The project reveals itself based on the listener’s head space and takes a new form on all sequential listens thereafter. The writing styles on this project are far from defined and a slew of talented artists join in on the timeless journey. At the record’s end, the initial verse reprises stretching over a field of horns drawing attention to everything being connected.

If the Nepenthean had a blossoming flower today; it would be the Udumbara (imaginary plant from Buddhist writings) that blooms only once every three thousand years. A project like this only comes around once per lifetime so truly cherish this body of work. As a bonus, each song contains the lyrics built into the files so you can follow along. Study all of the layers spread across these transmissions and remember two things: 11 songs but “numberless as grains of sand” -Huang-Po

and “in the very end, at the ultimate, there’s no room for rules or measures” -Seng-ts’an
